About Massage Therapy

2) How long will the session last?
3) Will I have to disrobe completely?
4) Will the therapist be present while I disrobe?
5) What body parts get massaged?
6) What should I do during the massage?
7) Will a massage ever hurt?
8) How will I feel after my massage?

1) Who will give my massage? Texas law requires that all massage therapists be registered by the Texas Department of State Health Services. Your professional therapist has many hours of training in various massage techniques, anatomy and physiology and knowledge of when massage is and is not appropriate.

2) How long will the session last?
Typically, a massage will last an hour or an hour and a half. Half hour sessions are available for existing clients who need to have just their problem areas worked.

3) Will I have to disrobe completely?
Most people disrobe completely in order to fully utilize the therapists knowledge of anatomy and various massage techniques. However, some people prefer to leave their undergarments on. At all times you will be warmly covered except for the area that is being worked on.

4) Will the therapist be present while I disrobe?
No. The therapist leaves the room while you disrobe, relax on the table and cover yourself with a clean sheet.

5) What body parts get massaged?
Your session will be designed specifically for you. A full body massage typically includes your arms, hands, back, neck, shoulders, face, legs and feet. You will not be touched on or near your genitals (male or female) or breasts (female). A light lubricant is used to eliminate excess friction but not so much as to make you feel greasy or stain your clothes.

6) What should I do during the massage?
Most people get comfortable, relax and close their eyes. While some prefer to talk, others choose to be quiet. It's YOUR massage and you should do what feels natural. Your therapist may ask how something feels or give instructions on what is needed from you.

7) Will a massage ever hurt?
Massage on healthy tissue should feel very pleasurable. When dealing with an injury or chronic problem massage may cause minor discomfort that people describe as a "hurt so good feeling." Tight, painful muscles are releasing but it feels good because they are returning to a more natural state. The discomfort usually lessens noticeably in a few minutes. The therapist asks to make sure that the pressure is all right and you may always request that it be reduced or another technique used.

8) How will I feel after my massage?
You should feel relaxed. Many experience freedom from their long-term pain or a noticeable reduction in pain from their injury. Usually you'll have increased energy, heightened awareness and greater productivity which can last for days.
